Pair of 19th c. portraits by Zedekiah Belknap (1781-1858), oil on canvas of a lady with lace bonnet and shawl, ruby and diamond earrings, gold and pearl necklace, and gold and onyx brooch, labeled on back of original ogee and gilt frame “Elizabeth Metcalf Marsh, 1778-1868”, and a matching portrait of a gentleman in black coat and tie, labeled on reverse “Martin Marsh, 1777-1865”, canvas is labeled “Providence, R.I.”, and shows a small tear lower right; Belknap collection, 25″ x 21″ (sight), 33″ x 29″ (frame). [Also included with this lot is a book titled Tale of a Dedham Tavern. History of The Norfolk Hotel by Walter Austin. Martin Marsh was a well respected citizen in Dedham, Massachusetts for many years, and was the owner of a Dedham tavern called The Norfolk Hotel, later called The Norfolk House. His portrait is pictured in this book.]
