Lot 35A: 19th C. Pair of Sperm Whale’s Teeth

Fitted into carved and molded pine bookends painted black, 6″ h, both scrimshawed on both sides with full-length Victorian ladies with flowers and vines above their heads, one side with a soldier in tail coat and tall cap on horseback, both show splits on front and back, some filler and glue, passed down through the Hawes family of New Bedford, Massachusetts, and consigned by the great-great-grandson of Capt. William T. Hawes (1819-1887), born in South Dartmouth, Mass., and at an early age entered a seafaring life in the whaling service, and became a captain on such vessels as the “Saint George”, the “Rebecca Simmons”, the “Omega”, and the “Amolda”, he died at home in New Bedford.
