Walnut, original varnish finish, six board construction, very finely dovetailed, (front is blind dovetailed), four pegged breadboard top, opening to a large till, lock intact, (catch plate repositioned), signed cast steel butt hinges “J. Coddington”, applied cut out bracket base (5 1/2″ h), finely cove molded with bold dovetailing, inset maple diamond-shaped teardrop escutcheon, (Note: a replacement was made 2013 by L. White, Master Cabinetmaker, as Dr. McCue purchased it without the escutcheon from Mary Dahm), with original cast iron key and leather fob, “Walnut chest, L-3.”, Union Village, OH, c. 1830-1840, 22 1/2″ h, 37 1/2″ w (case), 18 1/2″ d (at lid) – probably used for bedding.
