Lot 40: Rare 19th c. Adjustable Top Candle/Sewing Stand
$600.00
Maple, small turned disk top with spool holder and five (of six) turned spools with silk thread on steel pins, flanked by two turned steel candle cups with small turned outer knobs for hanging scissors and sewing implements, intricately turned maple shaft with threaded thumbscrew to adjust height of top, all on four turned legs, Maine origin, 26″ h, 8″ dia (top), 12″ l (bar), five 1″ spools. [Note: This stand was consigned to us as possibly Shaker from Alfred or Sabbathday Lake, Maine. It is unique in its turnings and its symmetrical scribe lines. The spools are turned very much like Shaker spools and there is at least another known Shaker sewing stand with similar candle holders. Our opinion: it possibly is Shaker and certainly influenced by Shaker design and usefulness, but more than likely it is a “worldly” made stand.]
Estimate: $700-1,000
